Computer Networking and Technical Support (Kingston)

This program will prepare the student to fill the role of technical support in the dynamic and expanding field of client/server computing, enterprise networks, administration and Internet management. Students are required to complete a work placement component which provides 4 months on-the-job training with a local company.

Upon receiving the CN&TS diploma, many graduates are successful in obtaining the A+ certification. Students receive hands-on training in:

• computer hardware
• applied Internet technology
• software installation
• scripting procedures
• diagnostics
• network installation
• operating systems
• maintenance
• user support
• web site development

A number of courses in the curriculum are delivered in dedicated labs using exclusively assigned computers, servers and diverse equipment.

Career Opportunities
Prospects for both employment and advancement in the Information Technology industry are excellent. Over the past three years, the demand for IT professionals in Canada has doubled as baby boomers opt for retirement. The Conference Board of Canada has projected a shortage of 90,000 IT workers over the next five years.

The average starting salary upon graduation is $35,000.

admission requirements

Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent.
The majority of Grade 11 and 12 courses must be college or university preparation level.

Special Scholarship Opportunity:
Qualified students may be eligible for special financial support, made possible through a generous gift donated to the St. Lawrence College Foundation, from the Advanced Technology Education Consortium (ATEC). additional costs

Books and supplies are estimated at $400 per semester. It is strongly recommended that students have access to an IBM compatible computer outside of the college. Students must finance the cost of such a computer and possibly Internet access for home use. Students will be required to use a USB flash drive for some courses.

To start in January, you must take the second semester courses in the spring/summer in order to be on track for the third semester in the fall.

Student Workload:
Most courses have 3 tests and 3 assignments evenly spread throughout the semester. Students should expect to spend 10 hours on homework a week outside of the classroom.

Work Placement:
As part of the fourth semester, students spend 16 hours per week on- the-job in a business environment as part of the work placement. The student becomes a fully functioning member working alongside and learning from IT professionals.
