Overview

This program includes all the in-school training required to complete the requirements of the Apprenticeship Program as defined by the Apprenticeship Branch of the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development.

  • Level 1 Apprenticeship Program Code 1006
  • Level 2 Apprenticeship Program Code 1007

Program length is 34 weeks with one 7-hour day per week in-school for each of the two levels of study (Level 1 and Level 2). The apprentice will work on the job for the other four days per week. Completing the in-school program and on-the-job training usually takes about four years.

This program is funded in part by the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development.

Program Highlights

This Hairstyling Apprenticeship Program is an alternative to our Hairstyling Fast-Track Ontario College Diploma program. This Hairstyling Apprenticeship Program will appeal to individuals currently employed in a salon who are working toward obtaining the provincial Certificate of Qualification as a Hairstylist.

Foundational skills are reinforced in Level 1 and Level 2 courses along with the on-the-job training acquired through sponsorship. Apprentices will learn how to:

  • Adhere to workplace health and safety procedures
  • Perform sanitization procedures
  • Perform routine salon functions and service fundamentals
  • Treat scalp and hair
  • Cut and style hair
  • Perform colour services
  • Perform a chemical wave
  • Perform chemical texture services (Level 2)
  • Work with wigs, hairpieces, and extensions (Level 2)

Program Outline

2023-2024

Upon successful completion, the apprentice is able to complete all work in adherence to professional ethics, government regulations, workplace standards and policies, and according to manufacturers specifications as applicable.

Upon successful completion, the apprentice is able to apply entrepreneurial skills to the operation and administration of a hair stylist business.

Upon successful completion, the apprentice is able to adapt to various and changing technologies, applications and procedures in the hair styling industry, and develop and present a plan outlining future professional development.

Upon successful completion, the apprentice is able to develop and use client service strategies that meet and adapt to individual client needs and expectations.

Upon successful completion, the apprentice is able to select and administer preparatory procedures and/or treatments to the hair and scalp using individually selected products to meet the expectations of the client.

Upon successful completion, the apprentice is able to identify, select and use a variety of tools to cut hair according to the needs and expectations of the client.

Upon successful completion, the apprentice is able to select and use standard and specialized techniques to effectively style wet and dry hair.

Upon successful completion, the apprentice is able to perform a permanent wave using current and relevant methods according to hair type and style.

Upon successful completion, the apprentice is able to colour, lighten, tone, highlight and lowlight hair, and/or remove pigment to the level of colour desired.

Upon successful completion, the apprentice is able to apply entrepreneurial skills to the operation and administration of a hair stylist business.

Upon successful completion, the apprentice is able to select and administer preparatory procedures and/or treatments to the hair and scalp using individually selected products to meet the expectations of the client.

Upon successful completion, the apprentice is able to identify, select and use a variety of tools to cut hair according to the needs and expectations of the client.

Upon successful completion, the apprentice is able to select and use standard and specialized techniques to effectively style wet and dry hair.

Upon successful completion, the apprentice is able to chemically relax hair by selecting and applying relevant knowledge of, and skills with, chemical products and techniques in order to meet the needs and expectation of the client.

Upon successful completion, the apprentice is able to colour, lighten, tone, highlight and lowlight hair, and/or remove pigment to the level of colour desired.

Upon successful completion, the apprentice is able to compare and contrast fibre types, application procedures, specialized tools, and maintenance procedures when working with hair additions.
